Concrete day

It was a banner day in the Copper Crown Suite’s garden. We started pouring concrete early, and things went well. Our crew placed the concrete, trowelled it smooth, seeded it with stones and trowelled it flat again. In the summer heat, it hardened quickly. By noon, the forms were off, and after lunch, Peter gently pressure-washed the new sidewalks to expose the stones. The last job of the day was to place the soil in the planters, preparing the gardens for planting. With the outside theme work now complete, the crew will concentrate on finishing the inside. One of four ready

While most of the crew toils inside the castle sculpting the tall arches, heavy wooden timbers and the stone and plaster walls, we are also working in the studio to sculpt the feature pieces that will soon be needed when the tall scaffolding comes down. The first Caryatid is now fully sculpted textured and base coated. More layers of paint and glazing will wait until she is lifted into position in the next weeks. Stay tuned…

Stage one complete

It has taken many months of work to build the structure, rough the electrical boxes and conduits, frame the details, insulate, board, lath and then do the intricate sculpting in the concrete skin. Smaller details such as electrical outlet vent plates and curtain rods were all designed, hand crafted and then installed. Painting has taken weeks, with three base coats plus the many glazes all carefully and skillfully applied. Today it all came together as the painters finished their work. We’ll do a thorough clean of this area and then the concrete tub surround will be formed and poured in place. It won’t be long until our tiling crew begins the fancy floor and bathroom walls. This will complete the upper bedroom reaches of the Copper Crown castle suite.

Just outside the bedroom the process begins anew as our talented crew finishes the lathing and begins to hand sculpt the detailed arched ceiling and then work their way down the ‘stone’ walls. Stay tuned…
