Architecture

Perfect execution!

When I was in my very early twenties, I pondered how I would make a living. I loved pen-and-ink drawing, but it was a struggle to jump to light speed and make drawing a full-time career. For a while, I thought I might enjoy being an architect. I took some classes at the British Columbia Institute of Technology to formally begin that years-long journey. I quickly discovered I didn't have a fondness for rulers and technical drawings, so I decided to focus on my art, which proved to be the right decision for me. In the decades since, I have enjoyed designing many buildings; however, I stick to creating the preliminary concepts and leave the detailed technical plans to others. It is the perfect fit! I take great delight in seeing the finished results, especially if the final result closely resembles my original ideas. Today I visited Kraay Family Farm in Lacombe, Alberta. I was delighted with the finished exit barn that I had the privilege of designing a couple of years ago. They absolutely nailed the execution, both inside and out! The beautiful building made me smile a big old grin. THANKS!

More details

The Copper Crown Suite of the Hazelnut Inn is receiving the final details in preparation for the grand opening on June 6th. The curtains are now in place, and the decorative cloth trims are being installed. Final cleaning is underway, and the cupboards are being stocked. Today, two of the royal banners were hung, with two more to follow tomorrow. As soon as the staging is done, I’ll sneak in for a bunch of photos to post here. Stay tuned…

Door fit for royalty

Detailing at the Copper Crown Suite of the Hazelnut Inn is continuing at a brisk pace in preparation for the grand opening, and things are looking great! Jay is doing the painting, starting with the inside panel of the door. The custom door and jamb were crafted locally by AJ’s Millwork. We then jigged the door onto our CNC router for basic routing, followed by hand carving to add details and finally some gentle sandblasting to enhance the beautiful woodgrains. The wood was then stained and varnished before installation. After the interior construction was finished, we turned Jay loose to make the door beautiful with colour befitting a medieval castle. As always, he knocked it out of the park! It is a handmade door fit for royalty!
