Yard maintenance

Keeping a small acreage looking good is challenging. To make mowing the lawn a little easier, I like to cut circles around the trees and fill them with bark mulch. Mowing around the circles keeps me from being swept off the mower by low branches. With 22 trees on the property, it is a good-sized project each spring to recut the circles and freshen up the mulch. Today’s task was the 9 fruit trees at the back of the property.

Sandbox heaven

Juniper and Henry have one of the biggest and nicest sandboxes that I know of, and they’ve been happy there for years, making sand castles and mudpies. This afternoon, they were roaring around the yard on their powered carts and discovered the shipping container out back that is the fine sand bin. This is sandbox heaven, with more than 20 cubic yards of sand up to 7 feet deep at the rear. They had a blast all afternoon, digging very deep holes and playing in the sandbox. At quitting time, they discovered that one of Henry’s shoes and elbow pads were missing. It took Peter twenty minutes of serious digging to find them. I suspect the kids now have a new favourite place to play.

Pony express sculpting

Vala’s Pumpkin Patch is getting a new ride this season called the Pony Express. We are building the water tower sign. The water tank is fully sculpted, and today I hand-sculpted the epoxy onto the routed sign. I had a blast, and in about 45 minutes, the fully dimensional sign was ready for paint. The bottom support structure is now fully welded and ready to begin the concrete sculpting. Stay tuned…
