First colour!

Yesterday, Juniper and I splashed the first bit of base coat onto the Hornae Toade sign. I couldn’t resist doing a bit of a blend to imagine how it might look as we proceed. When I am done, this will be a very colourful and fun piece, as I have many ideas I am itching to try. I just need to find a little spare time. Stay tuned…

Ready to load

Our good friends at JD Transport dropped off a fifty-three-foot trailer this morning. We loaded two of the smaller pieces and then carefully measured the balance of our pieces and sized up the tie-downs on each side. This allowed us to stage the load in readiness for the arrival of our other friend, Greg of Wishlow Cranes, on Wednesday morning. Tomorrow, we’ll check every connecting bolt and weld one last time to ensure everything is ready for the journey to Vala’s Pumpkin Patch in Nebraska.

Eager helper

Juniper came for supper and a sleepover today. She was eager to help grampa with the sculpting and painting of the toad sign. As always, she asked endless questions during our labour, learning not just the hows but also the whys of what we do. We worked for about an hour mixing the epoxy and pushing it onto the sculpture. Then came the fun part of adding toad’s skin texture using crumpled tin foil. Lastly, we made scores of little balls of sculpting epoxy and gently pressed them onto the textured surface to make warts. With the sculpting complete, we did some painting until it was time to head into the house for the night. Juniper is a pleasure to work with as she listens carefully to the instructions and is eager to do things perfectly. I appreciate her help!
