Mixing magic

We use a variety of concrete mix formulas which depend on what we are seeking to accomplish. For sculpting detailed wood grain we use a super fine sand mix which allows effortless carving using small, delicate tools. We achieve subtle textures by carving with a variety of tools to mimic the various woodgrains. Bricks, rocks and bark require coarse sand to be mixed in. As we sculpt, the stones peel out leaving a rough texture and small holes throughout. As we paint and glaze the cured concrete the darker glazes stay in the deeper recesses further revealing the magic we seek.

Beginnings of a masterpiece

Because we triple-coat all of our pieces it gives us plenty of time to experiment with colour. It doesn’t really matter what colour the first coat of paint is as the purpose is to lay down a heavy coat that fills in tiny pores and readies the surface for what is to follow. We always start with lighter tones and then build colour with blends and glazes. Christie’s favourite colour is purple so we started this sign with various shades to test the waters. We carefully analyze the result and then mix and adjust it with the second coat. By the third application, we will have narrowed things down and throw in some creative blends. Then comes the glazes to tone things down and tie the whole project together cohesively. It is an art and while I may be tempted to art-direct things a little I’ve learned to trust the painters. They have a great eye. If things happen to go a little sideways we are reminded it is just paint and with another coat or two, we can take things in an entirely different direction. Stay tuned to see where this piece goes…
