Road trip!

We loaded Lickity with the surfboard and plopped him in the trailer with inches to spare on each side. Eight sturdy straps were snugged up and he was ready to head down the road. Imagine the many smiles from everyone along the way as they travelled the 200 miles! Four hours later I received a text from our clients that Lickity had arrived at his new home in Penticton safe and sound. I’ll be heading up there this summer to take some picture of the finished installation and to sample some of his delicious ice cream too of course!

Caged animal

Lickity weighed in at a hefty 1800 pounds and with a small base gave us some pause when it came time to figure out how to transport him safely. Straps over the load would quickly wear through the paint. The answer was to bolt him to a heavy duty, custom made pallet. Once he was bolted to the steel base we welded on a sturdy taller structure which will be used to strap the pallet onto the truck deck. We’ll screw some dunnage to the wooden deck around the load for extra insurance against lateral movement. We’ve learned through experience that too strong is much better than almost strong enough. Tomorrow morning Lickity will be on his way.

Cat trees

We’ve begun work on an exciting new project - two large trees for Catoro - a cat cafe in Vancouver. The trees will have cubby holes for the cats to snuggle in. The incredible challenge of this project is that we have to unload the pieces in a nearby parking lot, roll them around the block to the front of the building and then fit the pieces through a regular man door. Then we have to stand trees up inside the building - all with hand tools we can fit through that same narrow door. The trees will be assembled in halves on both sides of a wall. We have things pretty much figured out but we are going tol do a practice run in our shop to make sure we have the bugs worked out before we transport the pieces to Vancouver.
