The castle gate structure received much of its concrete today. The rest will be done once the top is mated to the bottom section onsite. With the sculpted concrete in place the towers look very substantial and very much like a castle. The painted steel turret caps are almost ready as well. I can hardly wait to see the pieces assembled onsite!
Getting ready for crane day
We pulled a few of the big finished pieces out of the shop which of course made room to start some new ones. One of these was the beautiful curved roof for over the front door of the North Star suite. It’s a tricky piece with compound curves in both directions. Matt is almost finished the welding and finishing before it gets its coat of weathered brass. The cold weather snap (for these parts) is supposed to last another couple of weeks… just enough time to prefabricate a bunch more pieces. When the weather finally turns we will have a whole bunch to lift on crane day!
Sticking to the rules
I approach the Sign Invitational contest in the very same way I do when I am building a sign for a customer. The first thing I need to do is read the rules - very carefully. If I am building a sign for a customer I look up the sign bylaws of the town or city we are working with. Then by creatively interpreting the rules, to the letter, we design the sign.
The Sign Invitational has two categories. The piece called ‘Turning back time’ is for the smaller category. The rules state the piece needs to be no larger than 36” x 36” with the last dimension the depth being undefined. My piece generously fulfills those requirements. The piece can also be a table or wall mount. I opted for the table mount… and in reading the rules carefully it seems there is no rule that says we can’t build the table as well… for an ordinary table simply wouldn’t suffice. :)
