Waffle Wednesday

A few days ago my crew informed me that Wednesday (today) was a special day. I had no idea why. But they knew that it was in fact WAFFLE WEDNESDAY. And it was best celebrated by having waffles for lunch. Before I could say any different various crew were volunteering to bring the ingredients and plenty of toppings of course. There was chocolate syrup and smarties too for those into that kind of thing. These would not be plain waffles by any means.

Today at lunch time Sarah had the two waffle machines going full blast. There was fresh whipped cream, three kinds of maple syrup, and four different fresh fruit toppings along with the usual peanut butter and regular butter. The waffles kept coming as fast as the crew could dress and devour them.

I now wonder how many times a year it is proper to observe Waffle Wednesdays.

Another major piece mudded.

It is always exciting to see a major piece get it's thick coat of fiberglass reinforced concrete and then it's final sculpt. What up to now has been a semi transparent frame suddenly becomes solid and in this case MASSIVE. The crew applied the mud, smoothed and sculpted it. My  job was limited to spraying on the texture coat.

A bunch of new pieces are now welded and awaiting the application of the diamond lath. In a couple of days the crew will be busy sculpting the concrete on those. The shop is getting fuller by the minute.

HIRED!

With five months to go on the big project and still plenty to do we decided to hire one more artistic laborer. Today Kevin showed up at the studio for an interview. He was referred by two of our current employees which made for some serious points in his favor. He was a young fellow. I had to go up to the worksite just before he came and when I got back he was taking a coffee break with the rest of the crew.

I sat down with everyone and watched how he interacted with the others. I was pleased to see how he fit right in without wanting to be the center of attention. I have no doubt he was expecting a formal interview but by the end of coffee break my mind was pretty much made up.

Kevin had the benefit of being coached a little prior to coming in to see me but he also did a number of things very right. He was clear aabout his life goals and the things he hoped to do in the future. I loved his quiet confidence. He was dressed casual but neat. He brought a pair of work gloves with him. He also wore some shiny new hard toe work boots. The clincher was when I found out that he had brought a bag lunch with him so that he was ready to work through the day.

He was hired on the spot!
