Are we winning?

The huge job up at the lake is a lot like a very competitive foot race. My client is in charge of all of the infrastructure work and we are doing the theme work. I liken it to him building the cake and us applying the fancy icing. Obviously the cake needs to be built before we can do our work.

Some of what we are doing can be prefabricated in the shop. In a controlled environment and with all of our tools handy work goes fast. The stockpile of finished pieces grows each week out in the parking lot. As the pieces stack up it puts pressure on my client to put in the footings and foundations to which we will anchor our pieces. Today our crew was starting the concrete work on the next big piece that will be the center support for all of the swinging bridges.

Up the lake our client and his crew (and trades) are also very busy building the project. My client takes great delight with every cubic yard of concrete poured, every cement block laid and every board nailed in place. Each piece puts a little more pressure on our crew to do our part up there. They laid hundreds of concrete blocks and poured many cubic yards of concrete today. This makes it possible for us to do a couple more deliveries of completed features in the coming days.

The race is definitely on but it is more like a relay with the baton constantly being passed back and forth. Our true hope is to all cross the finish line at the same time. :)

Back to the shop for a bit

I'm excited to be back in the workshop this week. There is so much still to do at the site but it will be a few more weeks before it is really warm enough to do the concrete work there. In the meantime we'll continue to welding up at the site but in the shop we'll be busy mudding and painting the pieces that will soon make the trip up there. We've only got five months to go before opening day. It is critical that we make the best possible use of every minute left. With the cooler weather we are the most efficient in the shop for the bulk of the work to be done at this point.

I walked through the quiet work site today, looking at what has been accomplished to date. It's very cool. I could also clearly imagine what the park will look like when it is done. That will be cooler yet.

When I got home from my drive to the lake I grinned a big ol' grin when I drove in the driveway. The parking lot in front of the shop is still full of pieces that will be soon delivered. In the shop are two more large pieces, well under way.

It's going to be a great week!

A fancy cherry on top

The other day we went out to dinner and a show. As part of our evening out we popped into one of those make your own sundae places. I dished out a little of my favorite raspberry flavored ice cream, a little fresh fruit, a bunch of sliced almonds, some gummy bears for good measure and a little whipped cream - all in moderation of course. But I had to have one more little thing to make my sundae complete - three cherries on top. It speaks of my style.

The features we build are like that. Careful details are layered and stacked until we build the perfect feature but it is not quite complete. It needs one more detail to finish our work - a delectable cherry on top. The water tower was a delight to build. It has seemingly endless detail from top to bottom. It helps tell the story of this area and will serve a function as the water 'from the tower' spills into the sluice box where the kids will pan for 'gold and gems'. But one thing was missing. Yesterday I fixed that as I added the topper.

That is how one builds a delicious dessert. :)
