Today started by fulfilling our Dad’s wishes by scattering his ashes in flowing water, in the river near our house. It was somewhat solemn, quiet and brief as he wished. Then it was time for my two brothers and me to begin our grand adventure to sort out our many memories and thoughts. We had decided to do it together by travelling to where we grew up, in the small town of Castlegar, some five hundred kilometres distant. The first of our three days together was spent driving, recalling common dates, people and places as we travelled. It was the familiar road of our youth that we had been on so many times together when we were youngsters. We stopped occasionally along the way to jog our memories, for it has been more than five and a half decades since we left. We shared snacks and meals and rekindled our brotherly connections. Tomorrow, we will explore the area in depth and rediscover long-lost memories and places. We are looking forward to many wonderful stories and lots of laughs, celebrating our dad and the memories we share.
