SO MANY HATS...

lights on

One of the very best things about my job is that I get to wear so many hats. It keeps my days interesting and very challenging too.

One of the projects we are working on in the shop right now is  good example. I get to do some design work,  engineering, programming, machining, carpentry, sculpting, welding, plumbing, painting, wiring, photography, writing, janitor, delivery man and most likely a few other jobs I have forgotten.

This project like almost every project we do will stretch us creatively and open new doors to the future. As I work through it, my mind is racing onward... thinking of new ways to do things, and new projects incorporating these ideas on even more imaginative things

A few years ago I was privileged to get a tour through Disney’s Imagineering, the folks who design and build the theme parks. To work there is a dream job. My host surprised me by asking me if I wanted to work there. He told me I could have any desk (job) I wanted. Although very honored it took me a fraction of a second to make up my mind. I declined for I knew if I would work in such a place with hundreds of others I would do one job, not the varied menu I currently enjoyed on a daily basis.

Later as our own projects grew in size, so did our own crew, eventually numbering more than twenty. I found my task became one of manager and I seldom got to do more than manage the projects. A couple of years later we purposely downsized the company so I could get my hands dirty once more. Looking back it was the right decision for me.

It’s exciting and it’s a job I wouldn’t trade for another any time soon.
