Every grand parent worth their salt has pictures of their grand kids handy and will bring them out with little encouragement. It’s in our blood. And I’m no exception.
In fact I can do better than most for I take the job of grand parenting very seriously. The current issue of SignCraft marks the fourth time Phoebe has appeared in my articles. It makes me chuckle... actually it makes me LOL or laugh out loud in old school terms.
We’ve always had a home based business, meaning I was seldom far away from home or work. The line between home time and business blurs in a hurry. While it’s easy to put in too many hours, the flip side of the coin is that my family was always much closer too. Add in the savings of time I never had to spend commuting and I think the scales were tipped in my favor.
For us work is much more of a lifestyle. I get to do what I am passionate about and also have those I love close at hand. I’ve always had time to spend time with my kids. Unless I was out of town on business I didn’t miss many of the events my kids were involved in. That tradition continues with Phoebe too.
Working at home has it’s advantages. If the weather is nice I will mow the lawn in the middle of the day. I’m always handy if Janis needs some errands run. That can mean I will do some work in the shop after supper or on weekends, but it balances out too in the end - as it should.
Like when my kids were small, my grand daughter Phoebe has spent countless hours in my studio and workshop. She loves to help and I enjoy her efforts. Projects only take a little longer when she lends a hand. We’ve recorded those precious moments in pictures and as a proud grandparent I sneak them into my writings every chance I get.
The editor of SignCraft is a good friend and proud parent himself. We think alike when it comes to family. I’d like to thank Tom for humoring and indulging a proud grampa.
