THE MIDAS TOUCH

Phone

We’ve all heard the fable of the king who wished to turn everything he touched into gold. It seems I have that same magical touch. Sadly, the things I touch don’t turn to gold however... they just get paint on them. This paint  then seems to last forever.  What’s more, amazingly, it never shows up until it’s dry - long past any hope of removing it.

Although Janis would argue to the contrary, I am very careful when I paint - especially so when I’m wearing good clothes. I know the consequences. I can merely walk through the shop with all the lids firmly on the cans and paint will still jump onto my clothes. If I’m wearing really good clothes it can jump up to twenty feet!

Dried paint covers the phones, doorknobs and the steering wheel of my truck. Somehow it appeared in the backseat of my truck! The radio knobs have paint on them, my new leather office chair, as do the keys on my computer. Even my suitcase has paint on it. I have absolutely no idea how it got in all those places. It’s everywhere it seems and in a rainbow of colors too.

I pointed out to Janis the other day (without much success) that now my clothes all match. I certainly am sorry each time a new ‘incident’ happens. I promise to be more careful the next time too... but I suspect that this is a promise spoken in vain.

I’m starting to believe that it is really not my fault however... I now think it is hereditary. My son and daughter have this same affliction and our grand daughter Phoebe is definitely showing he signs. Many of her clothes sport the same colors. When Phoebe was first born I was always blamed as it seemed to transfer from my hands to her clothes when I held her. Lately I’ve noticed she gets absolutely covered with paint when she helps me - even when I stand well back from where she is working. She too is ALWAYS careful and also apologetic to those who care - especially her grandma. It’s going to be rough but I think it’s just something we will have to live with.
