The ‘O’ is plenty big enough for us to climb up onto the welding table into the middle for a comfortable way to weld and grind the center walls of the letter. This letter has a little over 70 linear feet of weld. We made great progress today with all the pieces welded into place. Tomorrow morning, Laura will do the grinding. We can then flip the ‘O’ and then weld up the back edges. It won’t be long until we start the third of seven letters for Downey’s Farm. Stay tuned…
2nd letter started
It was a hectic workday, in and out of the studio for me, but I did manage to get in a little time with the welder towards the end of the day. Laura did much of the grinding on the ‘Y’ once I had welded on the base structure, and we could safely stand it up. And that left the welding table clear to start the ‘O’, which fit together quickly, so I could begin to tack the sides onto the faces.
'Y' ?
Today, we finished welding the bulk of the front of the ‘Y’ and then needed to turn the letter over to complete the welding of the back. As we suspected, it’s heavy! The easiest way to accomplish the task was to slide it off our workbench onto its legs, spin it around and then lay it back down with the backside facing up. Things went even better than planned, and when it was upright, we paused long enough to grab this selfie and also step back to see it truly for the first time. It’s a big letter! And it is going to look fabulous with the other six letters that spell DOWNEYS’ when we are done. Stay tuned....
