The first phase of a project is to design and weld up the structural frames. The large entry wall project at NEB’s needs to be more precise than most of our projects because the thirty-five pieces have to fit together without unsightly gaps and they have to fit into an existing space. As we fabricate these structural frames we need to be mindful of how they will be fastened into place and how we will safely transport and lift them in perfect balance. Each section needs to be rigid and light but still strong enough to carry thousands of pounds of sculpted concrete. Kieth and Neil worked hard this week to finish the first piece. New project started
It was a very busy week in the shop as our fabrication crew started the complex structure for the first of many sections of the new entry wall at NEB’s Fun World in Oshawa, Ontario. The large wall will be about forty-five feet wide and thirty-five feet tall at its highest point. The design has undergone many iterations over the last six months and is a delicate balance of function and form. The challenging part of this project is that it needs to be built in more than thirty manageable sections to facilitate transport and assembly into a finished and operating facility. The pieces need to go together seamlessly when they arrive on site, so we will be taking the necessary time required to build the frames accurately. Magical colours
We have a good-sized painting crew laying on the paint inside the North Star suite of the Hazelnut Inn. As they triple-coat the base colours it doesn’t look like much is accomplished for at the end of the day the walls, ceilings and beams are the same colour as they were the day before. The dramatic changes occur when our talented crew gets to the glazes. In what seems like an instant everything comes to life. Rich patinas and weathered cracks are the magic.
