Hanging on to a favourite dream!

We designed this project a little over three years ago. Sadly, it never went ahead, but we haven’t forgotten it. Today, we believe in it more than ever. I had the opportunity to pitch it again today. Maybe this time?….

‘Blue sky’ designing is always the most fun. Ideas are definitely out there at this first concept stage, before the realities of budgets, timelines and practicality step in. Our prospective client asked us to design a 10,000-square foot (main floor) tourist-commercial project, where artisans, specialty shops, eateries and the like would want to locate. Our clear mandate is to stop road traffic which is abundant for the site under consideration. Our solution was to create an old world ‘1860’s shipyard’ with a twist. Our prospective client is a talented steel fabricator who loves a challenge so instead of timber construction we substituted all steel structural members, trim and decoration with a definite steampunk flavour. We would specify bare corten steel throughout so it would acquire a rust patina but not degrade over time. There would be little maintenance on this structure. The lower floor is all retail and the upper floor would be deluxe condominiums or offices. Should the project proceed it will be interesting to see how much of the original flavour we can keep intact. Imagine…

A few minutes from done...

Krysia worked hard to finish off the dragon today but despite her best efforts it will take another twenty minutes to polish off. The giant pink dragon looks amazing and will be a spectacular piece when it is hoisted atop the ten-foot-tall stone tower when it gets on site. While we wait for the installation at Castle Fun Park to commence he will live in our parking lot.

Home based business

We made the conscious decision to be a home-based business from the very start, almost fifty years ago. I wanted the best of all worlds, doing what I loved while still being close to my family as they grew up. There were those who questioned our decision but looking back we don’t regret it in the least. Because the world comes to us rather than us trying to find customers we needed something distinctive to make us stand out from the norm. Our residence is at the front of our property with the shop far to the rear. By adding a dynamic theme to the house it acts as a giant sign to let our customers know what we do. The result is a one-of-a-kind house that attracts a lot of attention and literally stops traffic, so much so that we keep our front gates closed and allow customers in by appointment only. In retrospect working from home was the best possible decision we could have made!
