It is very exciting to see the first piece of the Hazelnut Inn complete and ready to move out of the shop. As soon as the foundation is ready it will be moved from our parking lot to the property next door and set in place permanently. The 'power tower' will act as a power pole for the property. Plenty more pieces are not far behind.
First colour
Today was a day of home chores, mowing the lawn and putting up some long awaited towel racks in the ensuite. In-between there was a little time for some fun in the shop. I broke out some little brushes and painted the gears and 'steel' beams of the Sign Invitational 'TIME' piece. Normally colour waits until all of the sculpting is finished and all the pieces are assembled but this one will get a fair amount of paint first with final assembly to follow. It is just too hard to reach all of the sides of the little bits any other way. A bit of paint sure changes the look of things in a hurry!
Changing course as we build
No matter what the size of our projects, when the concept design is done it is but the start of the creative process. Rather than locking things in, the design is a guide that informs the finished result. Many better ideas are often discovered as the actual build proceeds. We aren't afraid to take away or add new parts as we go. As I began the assembly of the wall clock for next year's Sign Invitational I added to the thickness of the piece by several inches. Things were rearranged as necessary and the steam machine boiler has become horizontal rather than vertical. I also elected to use stonework rather than brick on the large outside arch as I began the sculpting process. A bunch of other changes are already planned as well. Stay tuned...
