One of the awesome things I love about having a well equipped shop is that we can fashion just about anything we can imagine. On a piece like my Sign Invitational entry I design on the fly, creating custom pieces as needed. Layer upon layer of detail is possible and a whole lot of fun to create. Signs, brackets and all manner of bits and pieces are easily designed and then fabricated, some by hand, some with the help of our fancy CNC machines. Yesterday, Janessa started laying on the base coats of paint and the MARVELLOUS MACHINE came to life in an instant. Over the holidays I'll spend some time beginning the aging process. This piece is getting more fun all the time! Stay tuned...
Colouring inside the lines
I spent the last official working day of this year colouring pretty pictures. We are in the last stages of preparing the mountains of paperwork in order to submit the application for the development permit at the city. This includes coloured renderings of the buildings. That in turn meant we had to make a thousand small decisions about form, function and colours throughout the development. Because each of the suites has a private walled garden (which purposely hides the front of the units) we actually had to do two redesigns for each unit - one with the wall and one without. As we discussed and drew the final coloured concepts for each unit we got more excited to actually begin the build. This is going to be a whole lot of fun!
2017 Safety Award
This morning at coffee break, the crew (led by the mischievous Brent) presented me with the 2017 Safety Award. I would like to believe that I was awarded the prize because I am always championing their safety, reminding them to put on their safety gear as they work in the shop. But I suspect the award was really tongue in cheek as I had suffered the most injuries this past year with the most serious being my broken toes. They had snuck a picture for the award from an entry to this blog where I proudly posed with all of the appropriate gear in place (as always).
