Skallywag Adventure Park is still very much a construction site but coming along quickly now. Giant machines trundle across the landscape, giant piles of dirt and gravel litter the site, rebar and bare concrete walls are everywhere and construction materials are stacked throughout. Workers labor in many different areas at once in all manner of tasks. My job today was to lead a team of engineers, foremen and owners through the site trying to get everyone on the same page of how it will appear when we are done, and how everything will relate to each other. The difficulty is that as I look out over the landscape I can clearly see what will be. They see what is present currently. They think in terms of straight lines of the structures and site plans. I hear the wind rustling through the leaves of the yet to be planted trees, and hear the water falling from the water tumbling off the beautiful (not yet there) rockwork. I also see the fourteen shipping containers full of features scattered throughout the site. I also see the rides set up and people enjoying them. It has been many months of typical structure building. In another month or so my task will be to make it look like a magical and imaginary place. This is going to be a whole lot of fun!
When Ships Fly
Today, the bulk of the second Viking ship took to the air as it started its journey to Dubai. The forty foot sections were quite a sight as they floated into their containers.
This has been a great project and we have enjoyed working with Whitewater West immensely. I can hardly wait to see the ships installed in their final location.
But for now, it is time to re-group and get ready for our next big adventure.
Site visit
As I went through the Vancouver International Airport yesterday I saw one of my favourite sculptures once more. It's titled 'The Flying Traveller' by Patrick Amiot and Brigitte Laurent. My trip through the airport and on to the connecting flight in Toronto was not at all harried - just long but I did witness a few flying travellers in my journey. The twenty-one hour trip to Trinidad is now behind me and as always I'm a little jet lagged and a lot tired. That feeling will soon be behind me after a little nap. Then we head out into the beautiful and very tropical Trinidad countryside for our first visit of the trip to the Scallywag Bay Adventure Park job site. Being Sunday, there will be no workers onsite, affording me a leisurely preview of the site. Meetings about schedules, details, changes and future plans will begin first thing tomorrow.
