As the paint and glazes are skillfully layered onto the Viking target piece by our talented crew it no longer looks anything like concrete. Instead, the feature now mimics the rich colours and textures of the movie on which it is based - 'How to train your dragon'. The warm colours of the wood play against the cool colours of the stone and metal. The pictures do not do it justice. There's only a few more finishing touches to add before we declare this piece done.
Instant rock
There was a lot of visual progress today. With the base colours in place it was time for the large Viking target rockwork to get it's glazes. The painting crew worked as a team, liberally applying various brown and grey glazes and then judiciously taking them off again. The solid grey-blue rocks disappeared and lifelike rocks took their place. The many textures, seams and cracks immediately became pronounced. But this was only the start. Once the crew got to the bottom they immediately headed back up to do some dry brushing which added highlights. Then they broke out the greens, oranges and tans and added mosses and other growths to the rock using sponges and brushes of various sizes and shapes. After some drying time it was time to begin the disassembly of the tall rocks. Next week we will be stuffing the pieces into shipping containers for the journey to Dubai.
Ready to disassemble
We pressed hard to totally finish the welding on one side of the Viking ship frame. Our goal was to get it polished off in time to take a trip to Silver City Galvanizers on the truck that will soon be picking up the masts that were sent late last week. We'll lift the top section off and then disassemble it for the journey. Just before quitting time today we were done and it was time to rearrange the yard to make room. We loosened off the bolts and will do the lifting first thing tomorrow. Right beside us the painting crew finished off the base coats on the large target and began the glazing. The huge piece is beginning to gather a lot of color!
