The Viking ship project for Dubai's Motiongate Park continues. Today the barrel feature was the project of choice. A thick coat of fibreglass reinforced concrete was first troweled on and allowed to set until it was ready to carve. Then we set in with our pointing tools, brushes, pieces of bent wire and soft brushes. It didn't take long for the rather lumpy forms to become wooden barrels, a shield and a helmet. We have a little more epoxy sculpting to do tomorrow on the chain, mace and other small details. Then we'll let it cure before the magic paint gets applied.
Day one of the Viking mud
Today, we began applying and sculpting the fibreglass reinforced concrete mud to the first of the Viking features. The boxes were the start. By the end of the day they were done. Tomorrow we begin sculpting the barrels.
Making tracks!
Phoebe was eager to give me a hand on the new Sign Challenge piece and so we put in a couple of hours sculpting the base. With little instruction she jumped right in and did a great job! Her portions of the sculpt blend right in to mine and they are indistinguishable from each other. I'm still keeping mum on the details and title of the piece for a few days yet but it is a true classic and a lot of fun!
