Pike - part one

I spent an enjoyable day doing the first part of the sculpt of Pike. Sarah did the tough job of mixing the Abracadabra Sculpt. This was a little different than most of the sculpts I do as it was more like a double sided low relief. This means there was some distortion in the thickness of the sculpted figure to make it fit within the four inches of the sign. Due to meetings through the day I was able to only do about 3/4 of the project today. The rest will follow tomorrow.

The back of the sign will only be partially visible to those in line for the train but I still included lots of detail to reward those who take the time to look.

It was fun to incorporate all the different textures in the soft epoxy using a variety of unusual tools

This sign is going to be really fun with all of the colors applied. The painting crew is looking forward to the task! Stay tuned...

All aboard!

We are slowly working our way through the attraction signs and they are all a great deal of fun! Most will feature one of the lovable Gruffles of course. A current project is the sign for the Skallywag Railway which features PIKE, the engineer.

The sign was cut in four layers and laminated up with a sturdy welded frame inside. This sign is designed to go through a hurricane should one go through the area. The hangers were welded to the structural frame of the sign post as well as a lower brace. In this picture Jack is doing the final welding on that brace to finish off the required structure. From here on all the work will be cosmetic.

Once Jack had finished his work I did the carving on the edges and surfaces to add the final texture.

Tomorrow I'll begin my favorite part - the sculpting of the figure. Stay tuned...

Cookie signs are fully baked.

The two signs for Cookie's Galley eating establishment are now finished. The painting crew did a great job!

Here's a pic of me holding the sign to get a better idea of scale.

There are a number of other signs for the attractions underway in the shop. It's great fun to create all these imaginative creatures in 3D. Stay tuned for more...
