Almost ready

Each year we host two workshops in which we share all of our 'secret' techniques and methods. Our attendees travel from around the globe to be immersed in our creative world for three days, learning all we can squeeze in those hours. We begin at 8:00 am each morning and go until 11:00 pm each night. The first workshop focuses on our CNC routing and our finishing techniques but we also deal with a great deal more as well. This includes inspiration, marketing, presentations and how we tackle our projects. The second workshop is all about our sculpting techniques.

We like to make the experience over the top in every way we can think of. Janis and her helpers serve up awesome home cooking and delicious treats. In the shop the whole crew pulls out the stops and makes it an experience not to forget.

One of the things we do is to make name plaques for each attendee. Each one is different, custom carved and painted. They make a nice souvenir for our guests and also serve to show the broad variety of design possibilities that are possible.

With only four more working days left before the first workshop the name plaques are in the final stages of painting. Here's a sneak peek of a few of them.

We are counting the days until our guests arrive. It's going to be fun.

Full steam ahead

It was a busy day in the shop with plenty of action happenng on many fronts. With the KRAKEN, a tall ship, a cannon and some smaller pieces in the shop there isn't much room to move around. Thankfully, each member of the crew works well together and they make it work, despite the cramped quarters. The push is to get the big pieces out of the shop no later than Wednesday afternoon of next week so we can set up for the first fall workshop on Thursday.

The starboard side od the ship recieved the bulk of it's concrete mud and was sculpted today.

The KRAKEN got it's first multi-colored coat of paint. Because this coat mostly soaks into the concrete and it is the first of three we lke to use up the odds and sods around the shop.

Awesome details

It was a crazy day for me as I did my best to keep everything running in spite of too many tool challenges. In between the craziness some very cool work got done. The gigantic cannon got the last of it's sculpted concrete today and looks great! The first picture is of the back side where golfers will shoot their balls on hole one. The ball will drop into one of two holes inside the barrel and then come out onto the green five feet below.

The second shot is the front end which will be visible from much of the golf and the courtyard below. The cannon will be about ten feet above the courtyard level.

Once Peter and the crew were done sculpting the cannon they moved onto the ship. They started with the figurehead and the captain's door. I had the pleasure of doing a little sculpting as well.

It's great fun to see the awesome details emerging from the fresh concrete each day. Tomorrow the ship will get a lot more attention and I look forward to seeing the result! Stay tuned...
