Good (again) old truck

Through the years we've owned many different vehicles, mostly pickups and all new off the showroom floor. These aren't show vehicles but rather used for daily, hard duty. Because they are used primarily for running errands and some heavy towing I prefer a smaller truck but with a V-8 to have enough power for pulling a trailer. The last three trucks have been Dodge Dakotas. One was sold at five years old and still runs faithfully for the current owner. One was destroyed in a crash (the truck was parked at the time and I wasn't there) with lots of life still in it. The current truck is now almost eight years old, long paid for and long out of warrantee. We've been debating whether to keep it and run it another four or five years or upgrade it for something newer. If we keep it, the possible plan is to buy a small ecomomical company car and keep the truck parked as much as possible to both save fuel and to extend the truck's life.

In the last months the pendulum tipped towards ditching the old truck as it developed an exhaust leak and wouldn't start without a jump far too often. When it recently failed AirCare (manditory on older vehicles) a trip to the repair facility was no longer an option. Without that silly little sticker on the windshield the truck was not even marketable. The exhaust leak was fixed, the key interlock replaced, a new battery installed and a bunch of other small repairs taken care of. The repair bill was a bit of a choker but manageable. Once again the truck has won a reprieve as it does its job faithfully each day. The continuing gamble is that the inevitable ongoing repairs will be less than the payments on a new vehicle. With our work in the next year plus being very local having a new vehicle is much less pressing.

It looks like the old Dodge will be run for a while yet.

Last adventure of the summer

Today Phoebe and I took time for our last adventure of the summer. She's asked to visit a local fish hatchery every time we drove by it. Today was that day. The tour was self guided and we went from tank to tank admiring all kinds of fish and learning about them. The highlight of the tour was when Phoebe got to feed some rather large fish and even got splashed in the process.

We were having so much fun we decided to add a BONUS adventure to our summer itinerary. A local farm had a petting zoo and it was just up the street. We headed over there for some more fun. Phoebe absolutely loved the animals with the bunnies and chickens being her favorites. The giant pigs got some loving too but they were far too large to hold.

For some added excitement we also tried out the corn cannon. It was AMAZING!

Tomorrow is the last day before shool starts once more, something Phoebe is looking forward to with great anticipation. I have no doubt we'll have many more adventures in the coming fall season and beyond.

Another summer gone

It seems like only yesterday we had a whole glorious summer ahead of us. I purposely kept the workload light in the shop so we could spend more time on the house - maybe even finish it off. That turned out to be extremely ambitious and summer went by in a flash. Or so it seemed.

Looking back, a a great deal of work did indeed get accomplished. The inside of the new house is close to done. The old house is gone. The ground is shaped and ready for landscaping. The outside of the new house is getting completed. A couple of weeks ago I wondered if it would ever be truly done. At the end of this week I am routing the last of the trim pieces at last and things are looking pretty good.

I've spent a good part of the summer at my design board planning projects that will take us through next summer and beyond. The upcoming projects are among the most creative we have tackled to date. That is an enviable position to be in for sure.

The last holiday weekend of the season will be spent working on the house with a little time off for one more Phoebe adventure.

Looking out from my studio to the mountain, the trees have started to turn from green to orange. It's just a tinge that is maginfied by the setting sun but it won't be long until the leaves are in their fall glory. The heat of the summer is fading fast.

As we head into the next season of the year I am thankful for a wonderful summer. It has been one to remember.
