Amazing modern world!

My dad is now more than 80 years old. He drops by my shop from time to time and each time the conversation is not much different. All the technology amazes him. For someone who saw the world go from horse and buggy to today's modern age it must be truly amazing.

He recently had me scan a picture for him of him standing next to his first car. It was taken in the late forties. The car was already more than 10 years old but he was proud, and rightfully so. It was quite the accomplishment in those days for a young man!

My dad has never used a computer in his life and I doubt he ever will. He owns a cell phone but never listens to messages left there. He says if they want to talk to him they'll phone back. My dad watches in amazement when I do a google search for him, wondering out loud just how it all works. My computerized router totally baffles him - for how does it know where to go and what to do next?  And how can I design the files in my office and send them to another room in my shop? The idea that I video conference around the world while sitting at my desk is a foreign concept to his mind. I sometimes try and explain how it works but I may as well have spoken in another tongue. It is a foreign language to my dad. He just shakes his head and says he wants no part in it.

All the modern communication devices and electronic tools are essential in our work. They are tools that we combine with creativity and imagination to do the things we do.

I imagine in another twenty years my grand daughter will show me the latest electronic device and what it can do. I too will be amazed. And like the many stories my dad told me, I will tell her stories of how I was born before the age of television, cell phones, faxes and computers. She'll most likely think of me as very old, antiquated and out of touch. She will probably wonder just how we managed in the olden days...

Working around the clock.

This morning the phone rang before it was light. While many would immediately panic on account of fearing bad news from someone they know, I instead wondered where the potential customer might be phoning from. Time zones are different around the world and much too often the folks who want to talk to me forget I don't live in their time zone.

Since we have a home based business it is so much easier to use one phone. Our business and personal lives tend to blend. While this may not be for everyone it is a lifestyle we enjoy. If the day is nice I don't feel guilty about getting outside and enjoying a little sunshine. The flip side of the coin is that if a project is pressing I can sneak out to the shop and put in some long hours. It balances out in the end.

The middle of the night phone calls are thankfully not too frequent, although there have been many through the years. I pretend I've been awake for hours and do my best to sound intelligent even though I've just snapped out of a deep sleep. Sometimes if it looks like we will be communicating more I gently remind them of the thing we call time zones. If it is a one time call I will smile to myself and let it go. Most often I can nod off back to sleep.

So if you live in some far off place and decide to give me a call don't mind me if I sound a little sleepy. Chances are I really am.  :)

Fresh start

I've been meaning to sort out my desk for a long while. Sarah straightens it up when she cleans the studio, but she can do little more with my desk than stack things neatly in the general area they belong. An end to end deep clean and sort of the twenty-one foot length was long overdue. Each time I have scheduled the time to do something always seems to come up. I've even started the task a few times, but along the way I get distracted and it languishes once more. Although there were things I should have been doing I decided today that I could stand it no more.

The best way to tackle the job was to simply start at one end. I was brutal this time, determined to largely empty the twenty one foot long curved desk of anything that didn't absolutely have to be there. Along the way I found plenty of things I hadn't seen in quite a while - a few things I had thought were lost forever. AsI went through each stack of papers I was distracted a few times, but was not to be swayed from my task. It took all afternoon before I was done but at long last it was empty except for the things that belonged. When I was done I had filled the large recycling bin to the top and another half a garbage can with junk I couldn't recycle. Lots of tools made it back to their proper place in the shop too.

For those who wonder what the writing says on the massive, curved beam over the windows...  It's in Latin and translates to "Dream - then build". Today, while I didn't do any building, my dream of a clean desk came true at last!
