Aliens

To get the best possible insulation in our new house we decided on spray foam for the roof areas. Instead of using typical batt insulation and a plastic vapour barrier at the ceiling level we instead are having the roof insulated (from the inside). The attic space is treated as interior conditioned space. The foam also acts as a vapour barrier. While we could have gone for R28 we opted go go above the required standard to R40. With the many potlights in our ceiling space a typical vapour barrier would have been virtually useless and very ineficcient.

The foam is sprayed on as a two part liquid which combines and then expands. While the two parts are toxic in their raw state they become inert and safe in place. But to do the application the ELEMENT Spray Foam team needs to wear protective gear. Colin and Ryan looked like aliens as they worked with bits of blue foam stuck to their coveralls and even handling a formidable gun.

We all steered clear of these guys in action!

I left just after lunch but it looks to me like they will be almost half way through the house by quitting time. The windows and doors are now less than a week away. I look forward to seeing them go into place at last.

Invisible progress

Tonight a fireman from across the road wondered how many coats of paint we were applying to the house exterior. It seemed to be taking a long time. The answer is a minimum of three coats and up to seven applications of paint when we apply the glazing colors. Progress on the house continues without much visual change but we are almost there.

Upstairs the Element Spray Foam crew coninues to lay in the fluffy foam. Each day more of the ceiling is coated in the blue closed cell foam. The insulation changes the feel and the sound quality of the rooms. The house is now 1/3 done.

Filling in the holes

There are so many steps to each project we do. With the house it seems to be all that times a hundred. Tonight my good neighbor Gord put my tractor back together (once more) and I hopped on to do some backfilling I've been itching to do for a while. I'll have to grab some more soil to finish the job but I got a good start on things before it got dark.

The large trees in front became instantly rooted in the ground as I gingerly pushed the dirt around the base of the giants. There's still plenty of hand work to get everything nice and even but they look pretty cool already.

I also took care of the pile of soll that was dug up by the tree mover when we relocated the maple tree a few weeks ago. I filled in the area next to the house. Piles that looked massive instantly disappeared as I filled in the holes.

Step by step things are being done.
