Dig this!

It is always an exciting day when the big machines start to roll onto the property and the digging starts. Today was that day at last. The first order of business was to pull the stumps and load the debris into the dump truck to haul away.

Then it was time to relocate the beautiful split leaf maple that was in the way of the new driveway. This tree will now be the landscape centerpiece of our new entry to the house.

Now the fun starts.

Making flat into 3D

Today, we carved the sign for the LOGIX block supplier. Typically we design almost everything we make with the dimensional aspects of the sign designed in from the start. The trick on this little project was to interpret a previously designed corporate logo into a three dimensional sign. It came out pretty cool and will look even better painted.

I can hardly wait to show it to Patrick!

It is logical to go with LOGIX

After a lot of research we have decided to use LOGIX Platinum insulated concrete forms (ICF) for our new house. This ICF system consists of graphite embedded styrofoam blocks to be stacked up, much like LEGO. Engineered reinforcing rods are carefully placed inside as we build up the blocks and when we are done high strength concrete is poured inside. The LOGIX blocks stay in place providing incredible insulation against outside temperature and noise. This building system can lower our heating and cooling bills by up to 60% compared to a conventional building system. The resulting building is one of the greenest available today.

Amazingly, the LOGIX blocks are made about five miles from where we are located. We used a similar system when we built our shop nine years ago and were very pleased with the result. We would never build with wood again. It is that good a system. Here is a picture of our shop in construction nine years ago.

We look forward to working with Patrick Chan, the LOGIX representative for our area.
